What You'll Learn

A five-step process for collecting useful subscriber signals, creating audience rules, applying them to campaigns, and reviewing the results.

01

Define the campaign decision

Choose a communication decision that a segment should change, such as who receives an invitation, which content version they receive, or what follow-up they need. Write the purpose in plain language before creating a rule.

02

Identify useful subscriber signals

List the preferences, profile details, recent actions, registrations, purchases, survey responses, and engagement patterns that relate to the decision. Collect new information only when it will change a future communication.

03

Create a clear audience rule

Define the inclusion conditions, exclusions, time window, and whether membership updates dynamically or records a fixed event. Name the segment so another teammate can understand the audience and its purpose.

04

Apply the segment to a campaign

Change one relevant part of the campaign, such as the content, call to action, timing, frequency, or follow-up. Set a frequency limit and exclusions for subscribers who may qualify for multiple campaigns.

05

Review and refine the segment

Measure the outcome that the segment was designed to improve, then review its size, rule logic, data quality, exclusions, and subscriber response. Keep, adjust, combine, pause, or retire the segment based on that review.
